Facing the Ageing Process

AegingAgeing can be a sensitive subject. It’s something we all need to face up to but it can still be a difficult topic for a lot of us to talk about, much less seek out help to do something about how we look and feel.

Your dentist may not be the first person on your mind when thinking about anti-ageing treatments, but it’s worth checking out what your local surgery offers these days. Many dentists are giving non-surgical cosmetic treatments such as Botox and dermal fillers. Vogue Dental Care in Luton, for example, is one such practice branching out into this new area.

What’s a dermal filler?

You will probably have heard of Botox – a well-beloved procedure of celebrities the world over. Dermal fillers aren’t so well-known but are just as effective in treating the signs of ageing.

Our facial skin naturally produces a substance called hyaluronic acid. It’s a sugar that helps to give the skin its youthful firmness. As we age, we produce less of it and so we lose that plump look. Dermal fillers are injections of a synthetically produced hyaluronic acid gel. Your practitioner adds it very precisely to the site of lines, wrinkles and sunken areas of the face and sometimes hands. Areas that can be treated are:

  • Nose to lip lines
  • Nose to mouth lines
  • Lips
  • Mouth to chin lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Eyebrow lines
  • Cheek hollows
  • Acne scars.

How long does it take?

The treatment itself is very quick and only takes a few minutes. There is a little preparation to do beforehand – you will be given a local anaesthetic to make sure there is no discomfort and to prevent bruising around the injection site. The procedure is otherwise painless. The effects show immediately, last for up to six months and are cumulative over time.

Someone you trust

Talk to your dentist about whether dermal fillers could help you feel better about the ageing process. As highly trained medical professionals with extensive knowledge of the anatomy of the face, dentists are ideally suited to carry out these treatments. And as someone you already know and trust, you already know you feel comfortable and at ease with them.
